Decluttr Review: How to Sell Stuff You Don’t Need for Good Money

You know how much of a hassle it is trying to sell your used and unwanted items on common platforms like eBay and Amazon. Who wouldn’t avoid that if they could? But if maximizing your return on those items isn’t your highest priority, there may be an easier way.

Decluttr is a service that lets sell your items directly to the platform. It’s not an auction site–Decluttr is a direct buyer. They buy items from sellers, and then they sell them to buyers who visit the site. You don’t have to worry about finding a buyer.

Not only is this a hassle-free way to make some money on your unwanted items, but the service is absolutely free.

How Decluttr Works

You can sign up for the service online, and/or download the app onto your mobile device. Once you do, you’ll be all set to begin selling your unwanted items.

Decluttr purchases a limited number of items, including CDs, DVDs, games, Blu-rays, books, game consoles, tech items, and even LEGO. You can begin the selling process just by entering or swiping the barcode on the item that you are selling. LEGO, on the other hand, is sold loose, and by weight.

Items are only accepted if they have a valid barcode. It has to be a barcode that is contained within the Decluttr database. If it doesn’t have a valid barcode, you can’t sell it there. They will even accept DVDs and games marked “for rental only” as long as the database recognizes the barcodes.

Any sale of items to Decluttr must be a minimum of $5. You can include up to 500 individual items in a single transaction. If you exceed this number, you’ll need to set up a new transaction.

If you have identical items you can only sell one per transaction. But they do recommend that you contact support if you need to arrange a bulk sale. That isn’t to say that they’ll accept it, only that they might consider it.

You can track the status of your order by signing into your account. It will be available from the “My Account” menu.

What Items Does Decluttr Accept?

Decluttr accepts a limited number of items for purchase:

• Compact Discs (CDs)–must be albums, not singles
• DVDs–but not VHS videos
• Blu-ray–all
• Games–PlayStation 2, 3 and 4, PS Vita, PSP, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS
• Mobile Devices–iPhone, Blackberry, Samsung, Samsung Galaxy, HTC, LG, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Google Pixel
• Books–college textbooks only
• Tech–includes Apple products (iPad, iPod, iPhone, MacBook), Kindle (Fire HD or Paperwhite), Tablets, Wearables and Smartwatches, and Game Consoles
• LEGO Blocks–sold by the pound, up to 20 pounds per transaction (complete sets not required)

Decluttr does not accept lost or stolen mobile devices. They check each device against a database called CheckMEND, which provides a history on the device. If it turns up as lost or stolen, they won’t accept it.

Shipping Your Items to Decluttr

Decluttr is only available in the US. Once again, shipping is free. You can only ship through UPS. Once you complete your order, the app will tell you the closest UPS shipping locations to your home address. You can include no more than 200 items in a single box.

When you sign up for the service, you’ll receive a Welcome Pack that will provide you with a supply of shipping service labels. You simply place that label on the package that you are sending your items in, making sure that the bar code is clearly visible.

Once Decluttr makes you an offer on your items, you will have 10 days to confirm the details of your order. Decluttr doesn’t place a time limit on how soon you need to send your items in. But they recommend sending them as soon as possible.

Decluttr recommends that you pack tech devices in bubble wrap within the shipping box, to protect them from damage during shipping

Once you ship your item to Decluttr, it takes seven to 10 business days for the package to arrive at their facility.

Decluttr Quality Control Evaluation

Once you ship items to Decluttr, the company will evaluate them for quality. That includes each item in the transaction. Naturally, the items will have to be consistent with the description you provided.

The examination might look for scratches that stop the media from playing. They will also look to make sure that you have a full set of sleeve notes, and that the casing is not badly damaged.

Decluttr won’t pay for any items that do not pass quality control, nor will they return these items to you. This means that you should only include items that you are prepared to lose in the event that they don’t meet Decluttr standards.

There is an exception to this policy with Tech items (mobile devices, game consoles or tablets). If the item does not meet quality control standards, Decluttr will return it to you free of charge.

Be aware that they do not purchase DVDs, CDs, Blu-rays or games without cases. Also, items sent must include all artwork and inlays, and be undamaged and unmarked.

Getting Paid by Decluttr

Once your items have been received and have passed quality control, Decluttr will send payment on the following business day. There are three ways that you can be paid:

• By check
• Direct deposit into your bank account
• By PayPal

Checks can take up to 10 business days to arrive, depending on where you live. But direct deposits will clear within three business days of the payment being made. These time frames will be in addition to the fact that it takes 7 to 10 business days for your items to be shipped to Decluttr.

If you’re waiting on the payment, allow about three weeks for the process to complete from shipment of your items to receipt of payment.

Decluttr Mobile App

The mobile app is available for iPhone and Android and is free to download. It is available on iTunes (for iPhone) or Google Play (for Android).

The app turns your mobile device into a barcode scanner using your phone’s camera. You can use it to scan barcodes, or you can enter the code manually. You don’t need to sign in order to scan. You can either create a new order or resume one that you have saved. You can review pending orders and even contact customer support from the app.

Buying from Decluttr

Any item you can sell to Decluttr you can also buy from them. So if you want to sell a four-year-old mobile device, and purchase one that’s two years old, you can do it on the same site.

This is why Decluttr can allow you to sell your items to them without having to pay a fee. They sell the items they purchase from you to users on their site.

On Tech items they offer a 12-month limited warranty, as well as free shipping.

Decluttr Pros

• Decluttr is just about the easiest way available to get rid of unused stuff. All you have to do is enter the barcode or swipe it using a mobile device. Decluttr will give you the amount they’re willing to pay for each item. You can then ship multiple items in the same transaction.
• There’s no need to place items up for auction and await the highest bidder (or risk getting no bids). Decluttr is a direct buyer, making for the easiest possible sale.
• There are no listing fees–what you are offered is what you are paid.
• There are no shipping costs. If you’ve ever sold using other online methods, you know what it costs, as well as how much of a hassle it can be.
• Decluttr Refer a Friend—hey’ll pay you $10 if you refer a friend to the program

Decluttr Cons

• Decluttr will not provide the highest return on your used items. You can often get more by selling them on eBay or Craigslist.
• You will lose items if you send them in and they don’t meet quality control standards. Decluttr won’t pay for them or return them to you.
• Decluttr pays no premium on unused items, even if they are completely intact in the original packaging. Decluttr will still pay you as though it’s a used item.
• Items you can sell are limited. You won’t be able to sell antiques, crafts, artwork or old furniture and appliances to Decluttr. You’ll have to sell those on other platforms.
• The payment process is fairly slow. It takes as long as three weeks if you receive payment by check. But this also includes the delay caused by shipping your items to Decluttr.

Should You Use Decluttr?

Decluttr is a welcome substitute for better-known auction sites, like eBay and Amazon. On those sites, you have to list your items for sale, wait out the bidding process, and then ship your items. There’s always the possibility that items listed won’t sell. There’s also the chance that you could encounter conflict with the buyer, mainly over the condition of the items sold.

With Decluttr you have none of that. You simply scan your items, get an offer, ship the items, and then get paid.

The disadvantage to Decluttr is that you won’t get anything near top dollar for your items. Declutter will resell your items, which means you’ll be offered a relatively low price. You may get only somewhere between $.10 and $.50 for CDs, or between $.50 and $1 for DVDs. But if you have a lot, the payout can really add up.

This makes it perfect for earning some money while getting rid of items that you might otherwise throw away or donate. If your primary objective is to get top dollar for the items you’re selling, then you should certainly stick with eBay or Amazon.
