Lending Club Debt Consolidation Calculator Review

Lending Club is a peer-to-peer lending company, connecting borrowers and investors with one another in the financial equivalent of a dating site. Admittedly, they have a very good platform in place to facilitate this. What’s even more amazing, though, is that they continue to improve it by adding new loan programs and features. Recently, they added a new tool to the site, which I want to share with you: the Lending Club Personal Loan Calculator.

What the Lending Club Personal Loan Calculator Can Do for You

The major benefit of Lending Club’s Personal Loan Calculator is that it lets you “run the numbers” before deciding. That is, you can compile all of your debt on the calculator, and make a determination as to whether or not a product, such as a debt consolidation loan, would be to your advantage.

This will enable you to accurately assess whether the time, effort, and impact of applying for such a loan is even worth doing. You will be able to view just how much money you could potentially save, after running different interest rate scenarios.

This is more important than it may seem at first glance. The calculator can actually show you the interest rate range at which a debt consolidation loan will be worthwhile. Considering that Lending Club’s interest rates run as high as 35.96%, you’ll need to know how high you can go on the rate before a consolidation becomes less beneficial.

Once you know your Lending Club credit grade, you can then use the calculator to run payment scenarios. It may also help you to determine which loans you’d like to include in the consolidation.

What the Lending Club Personal Loan Calculator Doesn’t Do for You

It’s important to understand that the Personal Loan Calculator won’t provide you with your Lending Club credit grade. That can only be determined by making an actual application, at which point your credit grade will be assigned.

But as noted above, the calculator will help you to know the maximum interest rate at which a debt consolidation will make financial sense. If you suspect that you might be assigned a lower credit grade — and, therefore, a higher interest rate — the calculator may help you to determine if it’s even worth your time to submit an application.

The good thing about Lending Club is that when you apply, they do a “soft” credit pull. This means an inquiry won’t show up on your credit report just for applying. Assume, though, that you already predict a low credit grade and don’t want to apply, merely confirming this. The calculator can give you a basic idea on how far into the process you want to go.

Learn More: Credit 101 — A Guide to Hard Versus Soft Credit Pulls

Using the Calculator – Entering Your Information

The calculator is incredibly easy to use. It uses an interactive chart that enables you to enter each loan that you want to consolidate. You can even include the type, the balance, your current interest rate, and your monthly payment.

The calculator will then tally up all of your debt, and display your effective average interest rate across all loans. It will also show your current combined monthly payment. This will provide a comparison for the debt consolidation loan that Lending Club can offer you.

lending-club

Once all of your information has been entered, you simply click the green “Calculate your savings” button. Then, you’ll be taken to the results page.

Getting Your Results

The Personal Loan Calculator will provide your summary on an easy-to-interpret page. There, you will be shown a comparison between the “Lending Club snapshot” and your current debt arrangement. This involves the terms that you will be offered for debt consolidation, based on a specific interest rate for the new loan.

Near the bottom of the page is a box that shows a “Months until debt-free” calculation. Here, you’ll need to decide whether you want a three-year loan or a five-year loan. You can also adjust the expected interest rate (APR) using the slide bar to the right. This is where you can determine if a debt consolidation loan will work to your advantage, based on various APR’s.

lending-club-2In this example, we’re looking at a debt consolidation of $25,000, covering five different loans with an average APR of 14.55%, and a combined monthly payment of $835.

Based on a debt consolidation at a rate of 7.96%, we can save more than $3,000 in interest alone over the term of the loan. That cuts the effective interest rate on current debt by more than half.

Meanwhile, the monthly payment drops to $783, which saves us $57 out of pocket each month. Given that we’ve selected a 36 month loan, the debt will actually be paid off two months faster after consolidating.

This is just one example of how you can use the Personal Loan Calculator to help you in deciding if a debt consolidation loan will be to your advantage. You can run as many scenarios as you like – it’s even kind of fun!

If you decide that you want to go ahead with a debt consolidation loan, you can click the green “Check my rate” button at the page. That will move you onto the next step in the process. Check out Lending Club’s Personal Loan Calculator and see how it works for you!

Credit Karma Review

Completely Free Credit ScoreThe word karma can be defined as “the effects of a person’s actions that determine his or her destiny in his next incarnation.”  The idea of karma is most widely believed by those who follow Hinduism and Buddhism, but Credit Karma is something entirely different.  Unlike future incarnations, the effects of your actions in this lifetime will affect your credit score… for a period of seven to ten years.

CreditKarma.com is a website that can help you control your finances by providing a report card of sorts. This overview covers your credit report and score, savings account advice, credit card guidance, and other financially specific resources.  Unlike other credit reporting sites, you’ll find two major differences that exist in the Credit Karma philosophy:

  1. There is no monthly trial membership or initial credit card charge for signing up
  2. You are not given an actual credit report to view, only a credit report card. This report outlines the main categories of your credit report like inquiries, past due balances, bankruptcies, etc.

When you log into your account, you will land on a personal dashboard that shows you an immediate credit summary. This includes:

  • TransUnion and Equifax Credit Scores — This is not your FICO score, but your credit scores from two of the three major credit bureaus, TransUnion and Equifax.  These will give you a very good idea of where you would stand with your true FICO, though. You can also see the difference between the information each bureau is receiving, to determine where any differences in score may be originating.credit-karma
  • Credit Impacting Accounts — These include reported delinquencies, inquiries, collections, credit utilization, and your average age of accounts (AAoA). You will also see the discrepancies (if any exist) between what is being reporter to TransUnion and what’s reported to Equifax.

In addition to what you initially see, there are also additional tabs, sections, and features with tons of information about credit, savings, loans, and many other financial topics.  The perks that come with signing up for a Credit Karma account are found in some of their neat resources, which you simply can’t find anywhere else.

Credit Simulator

One big aspect of the CreditKarma.com genius is their credit simulation feature. This tool can help you predict how your credit score will be affected by certain actions.  Do you plan to close a credit card, or purposely make a late payment because you can’t afford to send the check on time?  Well, using this simulator, you can determine whether or not your credit score changes with each action.

Credit Simulator

Credit Simulator
You can simulate all of the following:

  • Open a New Credit Card
  • Add a New Loan
  • Add Credit Inquires
  • Increase the Credit Line on One Card
  • Open a New Credit Card and Transfer Your Balances
  • Close Your Oldest Credit Card Account
  • Increase or Decrease Your Credit Card Balances
  • Pay Off All Credit Card Balances
  • Allow ONE Monthly Payment To Become Past Due
  • Allow ALL Monthly Payments To Become Past Due
  • Have An On-Time Credit History
  • Add Public Record To Your Account
  • Have One Account Go Into Collections

Credit Factors

Another cool feature is the Credit Factor report.  This tab allows you to get a birds-eye view of your credit report according to TransUnion and Equifax. You can see exactly how much of your credit is being utilized, how many collections or late payments are being reported to each bureau, the number of inquiries you’ve racked up, etc. And what’s always interesting to me is that they are almost never a perfect match between the bureaus.

credit-karma-2

You may be used to checking your credit through only one or two bureaus. However, it would be very useful to check at least two, if not all three. Having a compare-and-contrast option within Credit Karma’s dashboard makes this simple and quick.

There are plenty of other smaller features within Credit Karma that help consumers manage their loans, savings and CD accounts, credit cards and almost any other financial account you can think of.  The site also has its fair share of outside credit card and free-trial offers because providing a free service means they have to make money somehow.  If you can avoid signing up for offers and don’t mind providing your contact information to a third-party provider, Credit Karma is an reasonable option to help you better understand how your credit report and score will effect your financial future.

How to Save Money and Still Have a Social Life

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, socializing is the second most common leisure activity in America — after watching TV, of course. But spending time with friends often comes with a pricetag. The cost of event tickets, meals, and drinks can easily add up and break your budget.

Some may think declining invitations is the only way to avoid overspending on socializing, but that doesn’t have to be the case. You just need to get creative in order to stay within your budget. Here are a few activities to help you save money while still spending time with friends:

1. Activities

Find Free Things To Do

This may seem obvious, but the absolute best way to save money while socializing is to find free things to do. This way, you avoid pricey tickets and admission fees.

Every city has a number of no-cost activities — from seasonal festivals to local band performances, historical sites to botanical gardens. Simply visit your city’s website or do a quick Google search for free things to do in the area.

Avoid Shopping As An Activity

If you’re used to calling up your friends to take a trip to the mall, now is the time to rethink your idea of entertainment. Shopping should be for picking up essentials and not turned into a social activity. Unless you have a strong willpower, avoid casually window shopping with friends as well. This could turn into an unexpected, yet budget-breaking, shopping spree.

If you must go shopping and would like to bring a friend along, consider shopping at less expensive (or even discount) stores first. Then, head to the more expensive shops only if you can’t what you need at the cheaper ones.

Find Special Admissions

Special admissions can get you into your favorite spots for a lot less than regular price. Take, for example, movie theaters. The average price of a movie ticket is around $8 (though, it’s a lot more where I live!). If you take advantage of matinee prices and go to the movies during the morning or early afternoon, you can get tickets for much less. If you’re a military member, dependent, student, or senior, you can often pick up discounts on admissions tickets, too. It won’t always be listed, so be sure to ask.

Museums are another place where you can save big by finding special admissions. Museums typically offer free or reduced admissions during certain days or hours. For example, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City normally sells tickets for adults at a price of $25. On Fridays after 4pm, though, admission is free!

Bowling alleys also tend to offer special admissions based on dates and times. For example, New Roc City Bowling in New York charges $6.95 per guest per game Monday-Thursday after 5pm. If you bowl before 5pm, that price is reduced to $4.95.

Search around online or call before showing up to figure out which locations offer special tickets. Then, plan your activities around these days and times.

Use Coupons/Deals

Coupons and deals can greatly offset the price of socializing. Groupon offers plenty of coupons and deals on local activities.

You could get discounts like 50% off a kickboxing class or admission to a painting course for $15. Often, you can find discounts on restaurants, too, such as spending $15 for a $30 meal credit. LivingSocial is another website that offers coupons and deals on activities.

2. Meals

Lunch Instead Of Dinner

At the same restaurant, even ordering the same entrée, you’ll find that lunch is less expensive than dinner. This is for a number of reasons: portions are usually smaller, business is usually slower, and service is usually faster. Because of this, it’s worth making your plans around lunch rather than dinner, in order to save a few dollars.

Restaurant Week

Most cities offer restaurant weeks. During restaurant week, establishments put together special menus, such as three-course meals for value prices. Select restaurants — even those that are typically pretty pricey — give those on a budget a chance to experience their menus. Although the menus are limited, it gives you the opportunity to go somewhere new without breaking the bank. Examples of cities that offer restaurant week are Indianapolis, New Orleans, and Washington, DC.

Order Takeout Instead Of Being Served

If you want to save even more money, you can skip the service altogether and order takeout instead. You’ll still get the same tasty restaurant food, just without the added costs of service. Not having to pay tip can often save you anywhere from $15 to $30 dollars.

Skip The Drinks

If you must eat in at a restaurant, skip the drinks. Cocktails are pricey. In fact, there’s a hotel here in New York City that charges $22 for one Manhattan! Adding drinks to your bill can easily make you go over budget.

Instead, opt for water, which is free at most restaurants. If you still want a drink afterwards you can head to a less expensive bar. Or you can even stop at a nearby liquor store and invite your friends back for a gathering at your home.

3. Nights Out

Happy Hours

Start your night out early to save money on socializing. Plenty of restaurants offer happy hours, usually starting around 4pm. During happy hours, restaurants sell drinks and food at a highly discounted rate — sometimes even offering specials for an even greater deal. This is the perfect time to meet up with friends after work and socialize.

Pre-drinks

You can save money by imbibing at home before you even go out. Invite friends over for a few drinks, then split the cost of an Uber and everyone saves.

Drinks at bars, clubs, and lounges are highly marked up. Having the majority of your drinks at home will save you a lot, especially if you buy the liquor in bulk beforehand. Even with the shared cab fare, you’ll still come out ahead.

Rail Drinks And House Wine

Once at the location, you’ll probably still want a drink or two. To save money on your bar tab, opt for rail drinks and house wine. Rail drinks are made with the bar’s cheaper liquor brands. They are kept at the bartender’s rail and not displayed behind the bar with the more costly brands. House wine is a similar concept. These options tend to be less expensive than their higher dollar counterparts.

Cheap Transit

There are numerous ways to get around during a night out on the town. A traditional cab is probably one of the more expensive options. To keep your expenses down, consider alternatives like Uber or Lyft, if they’re available in your city. These ridesharing services tend to be cheaper than yellow cabs and towncars, and often easier to book.

Or you can save even more money by taking public transportation. With public transportation, just make sure you stay safe and follow familiar routes, especially late at night. If you’ll be out into the wee hours, ridesharing is probably a better option.

Wrapping Up

There are plenty of ways to socialize on a budget. You don’t have to cancel your plans or avoid going out completely in order to keep your budget intact. With just a little ingenuity and some planning ahead, you can save save money on activities, meals, and nights out.

Whether it’s finding free things to do, eating out during restaurant week, or taking cheap transit, you’re sure to find ways to save with this list.

What things to do you do to save money while spending time with friends?
