Optimal Places to Place a Bathroom

The battle for the bathroom is a common occurrence across homes throughout the world. Even people primarily living alone may run into this issue when hosting guests. When the issue about adding another bathroom to the house comes up, space and cost are usually the biggest concerns; but to the surprise of many, space isn’t as big of an issue as originally perceived.
A 3 by 5-foot area is usually all that is required to fit a toilet and sink. If you have a couple more feet to spare, a 5 by 5 can accommodate a small walk-in shower as well. Some common advantages of an additional bathroom can be convenience, adding value to your home, and the additional privacy of not having guests in your private bath.
Let’s look at where you can add a bathroom in the home – and where they are needed most.
Close to Living and Recreational Spaces
In a lot of homes, the placement of the bathroom is usually located closer to the bedrooms or in a central location between both living and sleeping spaces. The idea of having a bathroom close to the den or living room can be very attractive. And for the ultimate man cave, a toilet close by is an absolute necessity. It’s not uncommon to find a coat closet, staircase or hallway in or adjacent to a living space, as they can be the perfect spaces to install a half bath.
When hosting guests, it can be cumbersome to explain directions to the bathroom multiple times, especially if your home is larger or of unique design. Wouldn’t it be easier to just leave the door to your new bathroom open when unoccupied, so everyone can plainly see and take note when the urge to go arises?
Between Two Bedrooms
A convenient and efficient additional bathroom can be used to link two bedrooms together. This arrangement is commonly called a Jack and Jill style bathroom. This can be great for homes with children. Some well-designed Jack and Jill setups allow the use of private areas like the shower and toilet separate from the sink, counter and vanity area.
This style can be an efficient use of your space. Some standard bathrooms can even be converted in some home layouts. You can also save cash by incorporating this design compared to two separate bathrooms: why build and plumb another bathroom when you can frame in a door for less?
Split Your Pre-Existing Bathroom
This may seem like strange advice, but spend some time thinking about the size of your bathroom. Many homeowners possess bathrooms that can be much larger than necessary. Most of the plumbing has already been ran, allowing you to tap into water and drain pipes without making long and costly runs of pipe; this can be one of the major advantages of splitting your already existing bathroom. Though it sounds silly at first, making use of an over-sized bathroom by splitting it can give you the extra bathroom you need at a lower cost.
An additional bathroom is probably one of the most wished-for additions in smaller and older homes. Even in small homes, where it may seem unlikely to have the space, room can be found to make this addition. These optimal places for a new bathroom can potentially save time, frustration and money, depending on your exact configuration.

Today you can get your credit score from several sources and many are free. Here are the best credit scores sites of 2018.

Was one of your New Year’s resolutions to improve your credit score? Or maybe you’re hoping to buy a home soon? Perhaps you just like to be on top of all of your personal financial data so you can press on towards achieving your goals?
Regardless of your reasons, checking your credit often can have a powerful impact. Studies show that checking your credit score often actually helps you improve it more efficiently.
And, sure, you can get your official FICO score directly from FICO or one of the credit reporting bureaus–for a hefty monthly fee. But there are also plenty of great free options that give you access to an approximation of your credit score.
These sites can give you a free credit score based on your latest credit report information. Pulling your score each month doesn’t negatively affect your score. And sometimes the estimated scores are pretty accurate. They just aren’t the official score some lenders will see.
But to be honest, neither are some of the scores you pay beaucoup bucks to access. That’s because lenders can choose from more than twenty different FICO scoring models, plus models from other credit scoring companies. Since you never know which exact score a lender will check, it’s next to impossible to know the exact score a lender will see for you.
With that said, we’ve checked out the best credit score sites of 2018. These are the places you should go to get your credit score. They’re known for accuracy and ease of use, and we’ll tell you which scoring model each site uses, where possible.
Credit Karma
This site has long been one of my personal favorites for tracking my credit score. It bases its score on the VantageScore, which is becoming more popular with some lenders. But even if your lenders don’t prefer this score, it gives you a good idea of what your credit looks like based on both your TransUnion and Equifax scores.
One of the best parts of Credit Karma is its easy-to-use credit score simulator. This lets you see how different potential moves–paying down debt, missing a payment, opening a new account, etc.–might affect your credit score. It’s a helpful way to plan out your credit moves or just get some extra motivation for paying down debt.
Another advantage of Credit Karma is that it updates your credit scores weekly. Many of these free providers update monthly. It’s nice to know that if something is off with your credit, you can know sooner rather than later. And you can even get alerts when your credit score increases or decreases, so you’ll know right away.
As with most of the other sites here, Credit Karma makes its money by giving you recommendations on different types of loans and financial products. If you’re on the hunt for a consolidation loan or credit card, it can help you find lenders that might be a match based on your credit profile. And if you go with those lenders through the Credit Karma site, they’ll get a commission from the lender.
Credit Sesame
Credit Sesame also uses the VantageScore model. One drawback compared with Credit Karma is that it tracks only your TransUnion Score, and it only updates monthly.
However, Credit Sesame makes up for that in a couple of different ways. One is its robust credit score analysis. It offers a section-by-section breakdown of the different aspects of your credit score and how you can improve them. The breakdowns come with a variety of handy charts and graphs, and the overall presentation is nice. This is definitely a great credit score site for those who are more visual.
As with Credit Karma, Credit Sesame gives you recommendations for potential loans and other financial products that might suit your needs. They also offer you a variety of credit alert options. You can set up emails for overlimit alerts, credit increases or decreases, and more. And you can pay for more robust identity protection tools if you choose.
WalletHub
A relative newcomer to the free credit score arena, WalletHub has a slick interface that I really like. It also updates your credit score daily. This can be helpful if you’re in the middle of paying off debt or other moves that could impact your score rather quickly. Just remember that your credit information isn’t going to the bureaus daily, so you may not see changes immediately.
The advertising on WalletHub is less obtrusive than with the other two sites, but it’s still there. It also has a more all-around financial wellness feel. When you sign up for an account, it asks you about your overall expenditures and personal financial goals, which can be helpful. Overall, this is another nice place to get your approximate credit score for free.
MyFICO
Remember how I said you shouldn’t likely be paying lots of money every month for your credit score? Well, that’s true. But it’s also true that you sometimes might want to pay for an official score.
For instance, if you’re getting ready to apply for a home loan, you may want to know for certain what your credit score is. Again, this may not be the exact score a potential lender will see because FICO has so many models. But it’ll be more accurate than the VantageScores provided by the three services listed above.
Right now, you can get your FICO Score 9 and FICO Score 8 from all three credit reporting bureaus for $59.85, or you can choose a report from just one bureau for $19.95. If you’re serious about checking your reports for errors and ensuring you’re in ship shape for a mortgage application, I’d just spring the $59.85.
However, you would only want to take this move after using one or more of the free sites listed above to get your credit score in better shape. These other sites can give you insight into potential major holes in your credit report. Fix those issues, and then pay for the FICO scores to make sure you’re truly ready to apply for a major loan.
And, remember, you can always get one free credit report (not score!) per year from each of the three credit reporting bureaus. You can get these through annualcreditreport.com. These reports can help you find any potential errors that need to be corrected before you would apply for a major loan. So take that step and use the free credit estimator sites before you pay for your scores from MyFICO.

The Best MVNO Plans for Your Money
The cheapest cell phone options come from mobile virtual network operators (MVNO). These carriers use the networks of major mobile phone carriers, but at a much lower cost. Here are the best MVNO plans for your money.
Most of us know about the cell phone plans offered by the major carriers: AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. So many consumers get into a pattern of switching carriers every two or three years. It may be to take advantage of a similar plan at a lower rate. Or they may do this to get a plan that comes with more services but the same rate.
But the major carriers can only go so low on rate. After all, they have networks to maintain. That’s where mobile virtual network operators, or MVNOs, enter the picture.
What is an MVNO?
MVNOs are alternative cell phone providers that work on the networks of the major providers. But they do so with a much lower fee structure. Some major phone carriers actually own MVNOs. An example is Cricket Wireless, which AT&T owns.
More commonly however, MVNOs are independent carriers that only work off the networks of the major providers. Boost Mobile (Sprint), Credo (Verizon), and GoSmart Mobile (T-Mobile) are examples of MVNOs that work on a single major carrier network. Others work off multiple major carrier networks. Examples include Consumer Cellular (AT&T and T-Mobile) and Boom! Mobile (Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint).
The Five Best MVNO Plans for Your Money
Nationwide, there are some 50 MVNOs in existence. And we can expect more coming on the scene in the future. One of the big advantages with a large number of MVNOs is that they compete with one another for business. This is one of the major forces driving the trend toward lower prices.
But it also creates some confusion. With literally dozens of MVNOs, it can be tough to find the one that offers the optimal combination of price and service. To help you find that elusive package, we’ve put together a list of what we think are the five best plans.
We’re not going to focus on any single advantage – such as the lowest price – but rather the plans that we believe are the best balance of service and cost. Also, most carriers offer multiple plans. We’ve zeroed in on what we believe will be the best plan from each service for the largest number of people.
Mint SIM 25 Large
Mint SIM 25 Large uses the T-Mobile network. It offers both unlimited talk and text, which is common with MVNO plans. But it offers 10GB of data, which is much more generous than most MVNO plans. This should provide sufficient data for all but the biggest data consumers. It also includes hotspot/tethering.
The plan costs $25 per month for a minimum of three months. But they also have various graduations in their plans. For example, if you want an absolute minimum price, you can sign up for a 12-month plan at $15 per month. However, that plan comes with only 2GB of data.
All MVNO plans have significant limitations. The Mint SIM 25 Large limits its plan by restricting Wi-Fi calling and texting to select Android devices. And while international calling is available to most countries, you must deposit additional cash in order to take advantage of it.
Freedompop 5GB
Freedompop 5GB comes at a very affordable rate of $18.99 per month (paid in advance for three months), but it gets even better than that. If you pay six months in advance, the cost is $17.99 per month. But pay a full year in advance, and the fee falls to $14.99 per month. What’s more, the service comes with a 30-day money back guarantee.
It includes unlimited talk and text and 5GB of data. Freedompop uses the AT&T network.
If you’re satisfied with minimal service, they even offer a free plan. It comes with 200 minutes of talk, 500 texts, and 200 MB of 4G LTE data. This could be an excellent starter plan for a new, young cell phone user.
The one major negative: no hotspot/tethering.
GoSmart Mobile 5GB
GoSmart Mobile offers four different plans. The cheapest is $25 per month, but it’s very light on service. Two premium plans offer more services but run $45 or $55 per month.
The best is the 5GB plan, which is on the higher end of the price scale at $30 per month, and that’s only with auto pay billing enabled. Otherwise the service is $35 per month. But it does include unlimited talk and text, as well as 5GB of data, which should be enough for most people.
And it does come with hotspot/tethering, as well unlimited international texting to over 200 countries. The service works with the T-Mobile network. And best of all, there’s no contract with the plan.
Limitations include the face that Wi-Fi calling and texting are not available on all devices.
EcoMobile Unlimited 2GB
EcoMobile Unlimited 2GB has a similar price to the GoSmart Mobile 5GB at $30 per month. But it uses the Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile networks. That would seem to give the service more reliability than single network competitors.
The plan comes with unlimited talk and text, as well as 2GB of data. It will only work for those who don’t make much use of data. A big advantage is that it includes talk and text to more than 80 countries. The plan comes with no contract and no credit check.
They do have cheaper plans available, but only with very minimal data. Higher price plans start at $40 per month, and include unlimited talk, text, and data.
One negative: it includes no hotspot/tethering.
Republic Wireless 20
Also called the “My Choice Plan”, Republic Wireless 20 is on the lower end of the price range at $20 per month. It also makes use of two networks, Sprint and T-Mobile, and comes with unlimited talk and text. Unfortunately, it offers only 1GB of data, which is pretty minimal. However, you can purchase extra data at $5 per GB. The plan also supports Wi-Fi calling and texting. Like the other services, it requires no contract.
Unfortunately, this plan does not support iPhones and will work only with a limited selection of Android phones. And while the service lets you roam domestically for free, they don’t offer international services (though you can place calls to or from Canada without international roaming charges, and calls over Wi-Fi from anywhere in the world to the US).
Final Thoughts on MVNO Plans
In most cases, MVNO plans are something of a stripped-down version of what you will have available with the large networks. If you need your phone for business purposes or if you’re a very heavy user of data, you might be better off with the mainline carriers.
Also, be aware that the reliability of the service is closely tied with the network its attached to. Personally, I find Verizon to be a seamless network. I can call virtually anywhere and never drop a call. That means I’d be highly likely to select an MVNO that uses the Verizon network.
But the advantage with MVNOs is that there are so many plans available, that you can choose the one that works best for your own personal needs and preferences.

{#TransparentTuesday} There Are No “Bad” Emotions
I am a lover of emotions,
and I think the uncomfortable ones
get an unfair bad rap as being
“negative” or “bad.”
So I’m here today to set the record straight: there are no bad emotions.
Sure, there are some feelings that really suck to feel… but that doesn’t make them bad.
Let’s take pain, for example. The pain of your appendix being about to burst really, really sucks. But if that intense pain also tells you to get your ass to a hospital pronto in order to save your life, is that pain really “bad”?
Hell no.
Or what about guilt?
True guilt (meaning, the gut-wrenching feeling of having done something wrong or hurting someone) teaches us about right and wrong and how not to be a sociopath. Guilt, and the associated shitty feelings of facing up to what you’ve done when you apologize, are deeply uncomfortable sensations.
That makes them a perfect teaching tool for “what not to do next time.”
Think about a world without any guilt, where we never learned how bad it feels to hurt each other. It would basically be a world full of sociopaths and cyber-bullies and trolls.
So is guilt really “bad”? Hell no.
Some emotions are deeply uncomfortable and unpleasant, yes. But these unpleasant feelings show up for a good reason, whether that reason is to teach you “get your ass to a doctor ASAP” or “hey, maybe don’t torture animals.”
Discomfort and unpleasantness are important signals from the body, and that includes emotions. So how on earth did so many people get the idea that some emotions are bad and should be avoided (or repressed) at all costs?
Here are a few big reasons:

We don’t know what to do with big emotional expressions. Big feelings make people in our culture uncomfortable– even big expressions of joy can cause people to feel awkward and threatened, let alone big expressions of sadness, anger, or jealousy. People who never learned how to feel and express their emotions safely or appropriately often view emotions as dangerous, scary, and out of control. Best to just repress them and stay even-keeled, moderate, “logical” and stoic.

We are culturally obsessed with happiness. When we make “be happy” the goal of life, we’re basically saying “I strive to feel only this one emotion, ever.” Since we can’t control how we feel however, and feelings have nothing to do with logic anyway, we all constantly feel a complex web of many different emotions all the time. This makes us view all other emotions as competition for happiness and signs that we’re failing, so… BAD.

We think discomfort is the enemy. Our history and cultural values have left us poorly equipped to handle emotions, but on top of that sits the more recent belief that the way to happiness is to simply eradicate all pain, suffering, discomfort, and unpleasantness! Cue the spiritual bypassing of “positive thinking” movements, the over-prescription of pain meds, the escalating opiate epidemic, and the rising levels of depression and anxiety in a generation of people who thought they were supposed to feel “happy” when they grew up.
It’s this last one that concerns me today, because I spend a huge amount of time with clients helping them reframe thoughts like “this is uncomfortable, so it must be a problem that needs to be solved immediately” to “this is uncomfortable, and that’s ok.”
Discomfort is ok. It is, in fact (as seen in the appendix and guilt examples) kind of amazing and super important.
Even if you can’t see the immediate benefit of feeling your uncomfortable and unpleasant feelings, I promise you there is one. Did you know that people who have experienced heartbreak, trauma, and grief tend to be more empathetic, compassionate, and kind?
So why do we spend so much of our lives trying to escape discomfort, cheer ourselves (and each other) up, and change the way we feel? Why do we spend so much time judging ourselves for feeling bad, and trying to “fix” or solve everything that’s uncomfortable
It’s actually the story we attach to each feeling that’s the problem, not the feelings themselves– the story about some feelings are good while others are bad, or that you “should” feel a certain way based on logic.
This kind of thinking often causes us to invalidate our own feelings, especially when they’re the kind of feelings society doesn’t tolerate well– grief, rage, heartbreak, loneliness, depression, fear.
The end result is that we all try to control our feelings and make them more “logical,” in an effort to justify them. We feel shame about what we feel, exhaust ourselves by trying to ignore our feelings, and even criticize ourselves for feeling what we feel.
In short, most of us have a terrible relationship with our own emotions, and this is 100% related to body image and self-acceptance.

Being human is difficult, and beautiful, and painful, and wonderful. Discomfort and unpleasantness are inevitable and important parts of the human experience, and that’s ok.
What if instead of rejecting our emotions just because they’re uncomfortable or painful, we started validating and welcoming them instead?
Emotions aren’t good or bad; they’re all neutral. Some feel good and some feel bad, yes. Some are lovely and some succcckkkkkk to experience. But ultimately, all of your feelings are valid, natural, normal, and not a problem.
It’s absolutely amazing how much more positive your experience of life (and yourself) can be when you release the idea that you should only feel “positive” emotions, and give yourself permission to just notice and feel whatever emotions come up.
